For most tooth extractions, the procedure is relatively easy, so the dentist should only give you a local anesthetic. This will numb the affected area completely, so you remain aware and awake, but you will not feel any pain. In the case of multiple teeth extractions, or if the tooth is impacted, your dentist may recommend a stronger anesthetic. This would most likely be something that makes you fall asleep during the procedure. Either way, you will not feel any pain during the procedure.

Impacted and Non-Impacted Teeth

Impacted teeth occur when the majority of the tooth is located under the gum. Often, wisdom teeth extractions are impacted because they have not broken the skin yet, but they are beginning to crowd or affect the mouth. For these procedures, the dentist will make a small incision in the gum, locate and grasp the tooth, and then gently remove it by rocking the tooth back and forth. Sometimes, these teeth need to be broken and removed in pieces. Non-impacted teeth might occur when a tooth has decayed badly or the surrounding gum tissue can no longer support the tooth due to infection. Another reason may be due to overcrowding. No matter the reason, this type of tooth extraction usually requires only a local anesthetic and should be a simple extraction.

After a tooth has been removed, there will be an open socket where the tooth was pulled. Your dentist will put in a few stitches to close the wound. You will be advised to refrain from eating certain foods and using a straw. These restrictions can cause a painful condition known as “dry socket,” so be careful to heed your dentist’s dental care instructions.
